Latest in Electroluminescence Safety Lighting
Electroluminescence is a fantastic way to make traditional reflective or "passive" safety wear 10 times better. It's flat & flexible features mean that it can be applied to clothing in such a way that it won't affect the wearer comfort because there is zero baulk and it is lightweight. The nature of the product also allows the manufacturer to make individual words light up or flash. This has wide ranging benefits for anyone in the emergency services e.g. Ambulance, Police, Fire etc.
The use of Electroluminescence has recently taken a leap forward in its use in the public sector. The manufacturer of FlashWear products also uses the basic product as a lighting component in the latest road sign technology and even as poor weather landing lights for the armed forces. The reason for this is 2 fold. Firstly it is incredibly energy efficient and uses up to 80% less energy than traditional lighting. It also has what is technically described as a "luminosity" which makes the light emitted from it clearer (because the light waves do not quickly diffuse like LED) and can also be seen from a wider angle of view (again unlike LED which can't be seen from the side).
Therefore if you compare a FlashWear safety vest with a standard "cats eye" cycling light. The cats eye may seem brighter up close however the FlashWear safety vest will be seen further away. Hence they use electroluminescence rather than LED to guide planes in on aircraft carriers and the latest road sign applications.
